OFFICIAL! SUPER EAGLES SOAR INTO AFCON 2019 QUARTER FINAL AFTER 3-2 COMEBACK OVER CAMEROON

Odion Ighalo scored twice and provided an assist as the Super Eagles of Nigeria came from behind to defeat Cameroon 3-2 in an enthralling 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) round of 16 game at the Alexandria Stadium on Saturday.

Clarence Seedorf-led Indomitable Lions went ahead during the first half following Christian N’jie and Stephane Bahoken goals which cancelled out Ighalo opener for Nigeria. However, Ighalo’s brace and Alex Iwobi winner was enough to see the Super Eagles soar into the quarter finals of the tournament.

Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr made lots of changes to the team that played the last group game against the Barea of Madagascar with Wilfred Ndidi, Kenneth Omeruo, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon all returning to starting lineup – the same starting lineup that defeated Guinea 1-0 in the second Group B game.

Again, Rohr left talented winger Samuel Chukwueze out of the starting XI alongside Samuel Kalu and Leon Balogun who made an unbelievable error that cost Nigeria the top spot in Group B.

Nigeria looked more business minded in the opening stages with Ahmed Musa intercepting a Cameroonian pass just at the edge of the area but his eventual pass couldn’t find Ighalo. Next was a quick corner by Nigeria as Musa sent the ball to Iwobi, the latter wriggled and dribbled his way past his opponent before shooting wide.

The Super Eagles kept giving away set-pieces and the Indomitable Lions came close to converting one. Clinton Njie’s corner cross into the box met Michael Ngadeu but the header wasn’t enough.
